Joe Gardner's Jazzy Jams & Toast
Start your day with a vibrant, improvisational breakfast that’s as soulful and unexpected as a great jazz solo. This dish combines a medley of fresh berries with a hint of citrus and warm spices, perfectly spread over thick, toasted slices of brioche for a delightful interplay of textures and flavors. It's a comforting yet exciting way to begin, just like finding your spark.

Directions
- 1
In a medium saucepan, combine the mixed berries, granulated sugar, orange juice, orange zest, ground cinnamon, and black pepper.
- 2
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the berries begin to break down, about 8-10 minutes.
- 3
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Lightly mash about half of the berries with a fork to create a jam-like consistency with some whole fruit remaining.
- 4
Set the berry mixture aside to cool slightly, allowing the flavors to meld. It will thicken as it cools.
- 5
Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Toast the brioche slices for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Alternatively, use a toaster to toast the brioche to your desired doneness.
- 7
Spread the softened butter evenly over each warm slice of toasted brioche.
- 8
Generously spoon the warm berry jam over the buttered toast.
- 9
Dust lightly with powdered sugar before serving. Serve immediately and enjoy the harmonious flavors.
