Directions

  1. 1

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, until deeply caramelized and tender. Remove from pan and set aside.

  3. 3

Increase heat to medium-high. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan.

  4. 4

Season the thinly sliced steak with oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

  5. 5

Working in batches if necessary, sear the steak for 1-2 minutes per side until beautifully browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Do not overcrowd the pan.

  6. 6

Just before removing the steak, pile the caramelized onions back into the pan with the steak. Divide the provolone cheese over the steak and onions and cover with a lid for 30 seconds to allow the cheese to melt.

  7. 7

While the cheese melts, in a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, prepared horseradish, and chives to create the horseradish cream.

  8. 8

Lightly toast the hoagie rolls under a broiler or in a dry pan until lightly golden.

  9. 9

Spread a generous layer of horseradish cream on both sides of each toasted roll. Divide the cheesy steak and onion mixture evenly among the rolls and serve immediately.
