Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 2

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add ground meat and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

  3. 3

Stir in minced garlic, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, oregano, and basil. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it gently simmer for at least 20 minutes, up to an hour, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper.

  4. 4

In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and black pepper.

  5. 5

Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  6. 6

Layer with three lasagna noodles, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, then a third of the mozzarella, and another layer of meat sauce.

  7. 7

Repeat the layering (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, meat sauce). Top with the remaining three noodles, the rest of the meat sauce, and the remaining mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan.

  8. 8

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.

  9. 9

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.

  10. 10

Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving to allow it to set.
