Zurg's Imperial Invasion Layer Cake
A complex, multi-layered chocolate cake with rich, dark frosting, this dessert is as formidable and imposing as the Emperor himself. Each dark layer represents a new challenge, promising an intense culinary experience that's deceptively delicious.

Directions
- 1
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
In a large bowl, combine sugar, flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
- 3
Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- 4
Carefully stir in the boiling water (the batter will be thin). Pour evenly into the prepared pans.
- 5
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- 6
For the frosting, in a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder, alternating with milk, beating until smooth and fluffy.
- 7
Once cakes are completely cool, level the tops with a serrated knife if necessary.
- 8
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread about 1/3 of the frosting over the top. Top with the second cake layer and spread the remaining frosting evenly over the top and sides of the cake.
- 9
Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the frosting to set.
